Sunday Style Summary: Ombre, sparkles and the beastly Borgias

There aren’t enough hours in my days to write dedicated blogs for all of the amazing things I see whilst working so I’ve decide to try something new and group images & ideas together in a new Sunday Style Summary, a collage of delights from my Moregeous week.

Here are some of the things which have caught my eye and rocked my world this week:

2013-05-04_0001

  • All things Ombre – from an interior design perspective the trend has been growing for a while and I love how it can be bright and punchy or delicate and gentle.
  • Getting just a little obsessed with the raunchy Borgias on Netflix and unlike most viewers I’m, captivated by the classic Italian materials like travertine & skinny bricks amidst the splendour of Renaissance Rome.
  • Crisp mixtures of walnut and white, seen here with gold taps, yes GOLD taps! and featuring super cool food presentation on the delectable US foodie website Pinch Food.
  • New Tom Dixon lighting which is a departure from his metallic shades, loving the blend of “Rough and Smooth” glass.
  • Surprising light in the Crescent House designed by architect Andrew Burns, where holes in the wall create sparkling and changing patterns on the black timber walls and floor.

I hope the chosen images in these new Sunday Style Summaries will inspire you as much as they do me :-)

How to create colourfully painted, wallpapered and stencilled staircases

Doing some research on painted stairs and completely bowled over by some of the fabulous images I’ve seen. Time to get rid of that boring beige runner and bring a bit of va-va-voom to your daily step ups!

You could opt for the multi-coloured rainbow effect as with the four images above – painting the treads, the risers or both. Colours can be used horizontally, vertically or in a detailed and planned way (take a month off work to do the Design Ties one…)

Choose to paint a bright runner instead of carpeting or tell a bedtime story before you’ve even made it up the stairs! I like the contemporary and precise painted line running up the wall featured in the left hand image below.

These two are incredibly intricate and stylish, definitely for the more talented artists amongst us. The image on the right is hand painted but I’m unsure whether the one on the left has been created with paint or tiles, the latter would certainly be a durable option.

The black and white floral patterned stair risers below look like wallpaper. Keeping the treads white with white walls doesn’t detract from the intricate monochrome detail, very effective.

Personally I like mice but maybe this stickered look would be best kept for Halloween so as not to confuse the cat day after day ;-)

Just because you have period features such as the deep stained newell post on the left below doesn’t mean you can’t opt for a more modern staircase feel. The orange Orly Kiely wallpaper design works beautifully with the natural timbers of the doors and floors.

Another idea if you want to add colour by prefer a clean white staircase would be to focus the colour and visual invest on the spindles. The vertical vibrant greens  look fresh and punchy, I’d have this look in my house (if I ever get round to renovating it!!)

More wallpaper on the left to a staircase on which the risers have been stencilled. Learn how to do this here.

Simpler but equally effective is to design interest on timber varnished stairs using numbers or words of your choice, whether you chose to leave all the stair treads in timber or paint the side to match the skirtings. Loving the rope handrail too.

Two final ideas & two extremes…. the left a London Design Week installation created using picture frame corners, very clever but only really viable if you have extra wide steps…. and a super simple pared back look where just the edges of the stairs have been painted white.

And some more inspiration:

TIPS

If you are thinking of painting your stairs:

  • Throughly scrape off all carpet remnants and glue and remove all nails and tacks
  • Fill any large holes sharp area with wood filler in the same shade as your stairs
  • Sand sides, risers and treads properly using a heavier sand paper first then a finer one to get a smooth finish. You don’t want splinters in little feet! When you’ve sanded, run your hand over the surface of all the timber, if it hurts, keep sanding :-)
  • To the areas you are going to paint use a primer first on any bare wood, taping off the areas to be left bare (if any). I use the blue Scotch tape as it doesn’t leave sticky glue behind like other types do.
  • Use a hard wearing, durable and suitable paint, i.e. not wall emulsion. Think about whether you want a gloss or matt finish (matt might not show the dust so much?). Ask for advice at your local paint suppliers if necessary.
  • Use a decent brush not a £2 cheapie which will just leave hairs in your fresh paintwork and won’t give a finer smooth line to your edges. I like Purdy brushes.
  • If you are going to wallpaper the risers, the smooth wood must first be primed and sealed with a treatment suitable to allow the adhesive / glue to work. Then use a good quality varnish to seal and protect your fabulous new stairs.

Interiors UK 2012: Celeb spotting: LLB, a flushed George Clarke, plus Barbara Chandler’s Love London

Interiors UK wouldn’t be complete without a few stars of the interiors world and the dashing King of Flamboyancy himself was at the show, Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, appearing far too healthy and tanned for a cold January day. He looked as dapper as always but I was kinda disappointed he wasn’t in this year’s shades of purple or orange (see later blogs….).

I think at this point he was saying either boring interiors were firmly out of fashion or was telling the interviewer he didn’t like their line of questioning ;-)

Also speaking at the show was Gorgeous George Clarke, of The Home Show and Restoration Man. After his seminar he had a little sit down in the designersblock pop-up pub The Local. Clearly he was a little overcome at seeing Team Moregeous and had to wipe his brow. Entirely understandable ;-)

He felt much happier once he realised we only wanted a snap of his good side and got on with his interview…..

Funny one of Bud from designersblock looking entirely unimpressed with his pub’s star guest:

I thoroughly enjoyed Barbara Chandler (or Twitter’s @sunnyholt)’s talk on journalism and PR, with some fabulous insider tips on how designers / creatives can get their work looked at and, more crucially, published.

As design reporter for the Evening Standard, Barbara has clearly seen all manner of PR faux pas and was happy to dish the dirt to help listeners avoid the same mistakes. Some examples:

  • Always include an interesting and exciting subject line.
  • Don’t attach hard or slow to open attachments but get your info in the body of the email
  • Don’t rely on huge high res images which block up journalists’ inboxes but send small easy to download ones
  • That said, make sure you have high res images which can be speedily sent or accessed for when journalists want to cover your work
  • Write a clear, concise story, your story – what, where, who, when and why
  • Always include your contact details on every email and even every reply
  • Have a short bio on your web-site which can easy be copied and pasted by journalists
  • Having a launch? Include postcode, Google map or tube stop if applicable
  • Never send a CD which isn’t labelled on the actual disc, amazing how many people do this
  • Make contacts, one at a time, then ask that contact for their help & contacts. Nurture them, then one plus one plus one.
  • Read the papers / mags you want to be in and note the journalist or writer’s name, then contact them.
Brilliant advice from a woman who KNOWS what she is talking about! Designers note, Barbara is also a creative with years of successful photographic experience behind her, so she understands the process from both sides. Iconic London images she’s taken are currently appearing on everything from  Digitex homeware to Ercol sofas as part of her Love London series:

Trends and styles encapsulated in Interiors UK 2012 hall entrances

Well this trade show is going to be an easy one as I don’t even have to walk around the 5 huge halls ;-) Interiors UK have made it so easy for me to see all the latest trends and styles by having UK stylist Diana Civil create six stunning entrances to the halls!

  • Vintage Chic
  • Britannia Chic
  • English Eccentric
  • Chintz With Attitude
  • Classic Revival
  • Red Hot London

Of course, I WILL walk round them all, I’m only teasing, but what a great way to encapsulate the moods of the moment interior-wise. I think the one above, Vintage Chic, was my favourite, striking yet feminine.

I made six collages of the different English Heritage inspired areas. Which one’s your favourite?
